How To Keep Your Joints Functional and Flexible

How To Keep Your Joints Functional and Flexible

Nov 3, 2023

Today, we’re going to shed light on a topic that’s often underestimated – exercise and its pivotal role in joint health. Have you ever heard the saying, “motion is lotion for your body”?

Well, it holds more truth than you might imagine.

When we engage in physical activity, we’re not only putting our bodies in motion, but we’re also providing vital nourishment to our joints and bolstering circulation.

It’s crucial to understand that immobilizing a joint, as is often advised in certain medical scenarios, can actually be counterproductive.

This is especially true for those dealing with minor discomfort or stiffness. You see, in many cases, what you might be experiencing is an accumulation of acidic residues in your joints. This can be attributed to excessive consumption of animal-based foods rich in saturated fats, as well as grains that contain fibers with sharp, glass-like properties.

So, when you find yourself in this situation, it’s imperative to get moving. Of course, exercise within your comfort zone, and if you encounter severe pain, exercise caution.

The goal here is to gently encourage movement, allowing the synovial fluidthe natural lubricant of your joints – to flow and do its job effectively.

I recently faced a similar issue with my finger due to my avid tennis playing.

The joint had become stiff and unbending, causing discomfort. Following advice from Ben over at ATG, I initiated a regimen of gentle joint movements.

It started with 20 repetitions, two to three times a day. Gradually, I noticed a remarkable improvement. The synovial fluid was doing its job, bringing much-needed nutrients and promoting healing in the joint.

Today, I’ve decided to incorporate sprints into my routine.

Sprinting, with its short bursts of intense activity. It’s a fantastic way to infuse some high-intensity exercise into my regimen. I’ll start easy, gradually building up, aiming for five to six sprints with short walks in between for recovery.

Despite not hitting my target this time, I’m excited about the progress. I’m grateful for this softer surface, providing a gentle foundation for my sprinting endeavors. And yes, it’s a great opportunity to commune with my fruit-bearing friends along the way.

Remember, motion is indeed lotion for your joints. Whether it’s gentle movements or invigorating sprints, incorporating exercise into your routine can make a significant difference in joint health.
